Changing a Keg - KeyKeg

Use the instructions below when changing a KeyKeg (pictured).

Note: There are different steps to take for a line that has a Sestra Smart FOB versus one that does not. We've included instructions for both below.

Hint: Need help identifying an empty keg? When a keg is empty, the Push to Pour button light will begin to blink slowly. If you press the button, you will see the light rapidly blink, then continue slowly blinking.

Changing a KeyKeg (WITHOUT a Sestra Smart FOB)

  1. Identify the empty keg and retrieve a new one. Put the new keg next to or near the empty one. Do not detach the coupler from the empty keg until the new keg is in place and ready to be tapped.
  2. Remove the plastic cap from the top, making sure to remove any broken pieces.
  3. Remove the coupler from the empty keg.
    1. Squeezing the top and bottom of the coupler lever together to release.
    2. Lift up holding ONLY the top of the lever until you feel a click.

Note: The compressor will come on while you are lifting the lever but should turn off when the lever clicks into position. If you hear the compressor continue to run, the coupler lever is not all the way up.
    3. Gently turn the coupler COUNTERCLOCKWISE to disengage from the keg - about ¼ turn.
    4. Lift the coupler free from the keg, keeping it upright with the opening face down.
  4. Keeping the coupler level, spray the bottom with Nixall. Spray the top of the new keg with Nixall.
  5. Attach the coupler to the new keg.
    1. Place the coupler on the new keg and slowly turn/adjust until it falls into place. There are notches on the coupler that match up with notches on the keg head.
    2. Gently turn the coupler CLOCKWISE to engage it with the keg head - about ¼ turn.
    3. Squeeze the top and bottom of the coupler lever together to release.
    4. Push down on ONLY the top of the lever until you feel it click into place.
  6. The compressor will come on and begin pressurizing the new keg. Once the compressor stops running, your new keg is pressurized and you are ready to pour.

Note: It will take about 30 seconds to pressurize a brand new keg. If the compressor runs for more than a minute, please recouple the keg to ensure a proper seal.

Note: After a keg change on a line without a Sestra Smart FOB, there may be a small air bubble in the line. You can push past this by pouring 2-3 glasses.

  7. Reset the smart FOB
    1. Make sure the bottom bypass lever is in the UP position to allow the float rise.
    2. Press down on the top vent button for at least 10 seconds to bleed the chamber and release any gas. If you have a long draw set-up, you will need to bleed the smart FOB for an additional 10 seconds.
    3. The float should no longer be sitting at the bottom of the chamber.
